PROJECT SPOTLIGHT

How one ownership team transformed the soul of a Breckenridge hotel

High atop an enviable piece of real estate, overlooking the postcard-perfect town of Breckenridge, Colo., sat a DoubleTree hotel. Built in the 1980s and located steps away from the lift at Peak 9, it served tens of thousands of visitors each year who come to hit the slopes and explore Main Street.

But having undergone only one major renovation since its opening, there was a growing problem. Travelers would spend the day in an extraordinary location, then return to a hotel that offered an unremarkable experience. And slowly but surely, this gap was widening.

Then hotel ownership changed hands in 2022, and the new owners knew they had to make a bold move. And that move was to bring the hotel into the Curio Collection by Hilton.

The Curio Collection, among the most prized brands in Hilton’s portfolio, has no template. Each hotel has its own identity, with each property uniquely designed to celebrate its surroundings and offer a luxury experience unlike any other.

And so, the former DoubleTree was gutted, and the $67 million renovation left no stone unturned. From custom welcome desks designed to resemble the Colorado Rockies, to the redesigned guest rooms, to the brand new restaurants and bars offering local fare, and a new, two-story lobby featuring windows designed to perfectly frame the mountains —  every detail was poured over to ensure the spirit of Breckenridge imbued the guest experience. And thus, the newly-renamed Hotel Alpenrock, a Curio Collection by Hilton was brought to life.

Once completed, the project went on to win ENR Mountain States’ 2025 Best Project for Renovation/Restoration, a recognition that honors the ambitious transformation of a decades-old mountain property.

Hotel Alpenrock offers a bigger takeaway for owners facing aging properties: Sometimes the opportunity isn’t to make the hotel you have better. Sometimes, you need a different hotel altogether.
